Save Electricity at Home

Our energy rates have gone up again! To lower your electricity cost, read on the home energy saving tips below.

One. Fridge - The high price of electricity does not imply you've got to put your budget in the deepfreeze to keep foods cool. There's much you can do to manage - and to reduce - the price of operating a refrigerator.

- don't buy a bigger unit than you require. It is more expensive and costs more to run.
- Cool water dispensers add to the machine's cost at first, but can save one to three % on the monthly electrical bill by reducing cooling lost by constant opening of the door.
- Don't overload the refrigerator. It must be able to circulate cold air around all the containers.
- Keep the chiller away from all heat sources, including direct daylight, stoves.
- remember to close chiller doors snugly. Don't hang dishrags or pot holders on the door. They can keep it from closing properly.
- Avoid opening the doors more frequently than necessary. If at all possible, take out more than one item at a time.
- Keep the fridge as full as practical without overloading it. The frozen food itself helps keep the refrigerator cold - without using energy.
- When possible [*COMMA] let foods cool before placing them in the chiller. But ensure you don't let them screw up.
- Keep frozen foods in the fridge to defrost them. The cold from the unfreezing food helps cool the chiller.
- Remember that the coldest section of most refrigerators is the back part of the highest shelf. Put items needing cooler temperatures there, rather than moving the dial to a higher setting.
- ensure cooling coils and outside operating parts are clean. Dirt makes the unit work harder. Usually, the instruction book included with the machine will give cleaning instructions.
- Leave your fridge ( and fridge, if they are separate ) empty, clean, and unplugged while you are on a long vacation. Don't forget to leave the doors open. During brief journeys, try and leave the fridge as empty as possible, and on a warmer setting.

two. Turn off lights when the room or area isn't in use.

3. Rather than incandescent light bulbs, use fluorescent bulbs - they use nearly 75 % less energy and their lifespan is ten times longer. Keep bulbs and fixtures free of dust and dirt.

4. Unplug appliances when not in use. Change the old practice of leaving appliances plugged in the full night and day. A plugged computer, electric iron, or television set - even if no one is operating it - still consumes energy.

If these home energy saving tips appear to be straightforward common sense to you ; you're right . But you'd be surprised to find out what number of folks pay loads more than they have to in electricity bills, when it's so easy to lower your electricity cost.

While reducing your energy bill, why not reduce some of the debris in your home or garage as well . Vinyl storage sheds can help to solve almost all of your storage wants. Mini storage buildings are a good way to store and lock away items you want to keep, yet also keep them easily accessible when you want them.

Energy suppliers in UK-Galvanizing the nation !!

Energy has become an integral part of whatever we do. It is quite astonishing that almost all the things that we possess or see around us are influenced by electricity in one way or the other. Whether it is the electronic gadgets that have made life simpler, the cooking gas we use or the fuel that drives our cars, the list is practically endless. One cannot even imagine the humongous quantity of energy required. Thankfully, energy providers are constantly on the look for newer energy sources so that the demands of the people are always taken care of..

The tremendous boom in the energy industry has compelled many companies to jump on this bandwagon. Energy suppliers in UK include Npower, British Gas, E-on, ScottishPower and edf energy. These suppliers receive energy form the grid. These companies then provide energy supply to our homes. But the question is where does the company profit from this receiving and forwarding. These companies, hence, charge the user at a higher rate than the one at which they receive from the grid. The presence of multiple providers means that an individual has an array of options, in the form of deals, to choose from.

British Gas continues to be the largest energy supplier in the UK, It offers gas services, electricity services and the dual fuel service which incorporates both gas and electricity. Besides, all leading energy suppliers in UK have their own websites that provide round the clock information on the company's latest deals. Purchasing deals and paying bills via the Internet can fetch you handsome discounts too. Besides, with a view to conservation of energy, these websites also offer tips to save electricity and reduce wastage. These include installation of solar panels and solar water heaters, providing good insulation on the walls and installing energy efficient radiators. Generic advice includes switching off unused lights, putting devices off standby mode. Also, one should buy good quality appliances and prefer showers over bathing in a tub.

Yet another way of reducing energy bills is to switch suppliers. Fierce competition has compelled energy providers to come up with cheaper and more rewarding deals for customers. The onset of winter season is considered the best time to switch energy suppliers in UK. The best way to do this is via the comparison websites. Just enter the post code of the area you live in and the website displays a list of all gas and electricity providers in that region. Although switching is a smooth process, one ought to give a one month notice to the old energy provider and clear their outstanding dues, if any.

Energy suppliers in UK flood in flashy deals in order to increase its users. There is no harm in switching. Some people consider it unethical and persevere with the service of the same provider. However, almost everyone takes advantage of such deals. Besides, regulations in UK are such that the switching process is hassle free and very transparent. According to statistics revealed by Ofgem, the gas and electricity regulator in UK, over 5 million people switched suppliers in 2007 and went on to save £150. To sum it up, one needs to be aware of all the latest deals in the market in order to save money and, most importantly, attain peace of mind.

What window blinds are good for this new home ?

I recently purchase a townhome which was built in 2004. I have some questions about the blinds which needs to get into my windows.

I am not into any fancy or expensive ones.

1) Does installing a certain type of blinds for the windows will save energy and electricity bills ?

2) If YES to the above what blinds does it ?

3) Is it worth putting those blinds ?

4) I am planning on putting those cordless cellular shades (single cell) ALABASTER color ( window images) ? Are they good ?

The cellular shades do help with insulation. The more cells the more insulation. You need to take exact measurements. Check home improvement centers, they may have them where they can be adjusted. Hope this helps. Roxanne

are schools environmental friendly?

Well I dont know if you know but it seems our natural resources and more are in used too much. I was wondering do schools actually care about saving the environment by using energy saving lights because i see lights will always on and computers are never shut down. recycling is sometimes i see, and i dont know what else to say, but dont you think its a good idea that saving electricity is a start schools should do?

Yes, turning off lights are one of the most simple things we can do to help the environment but still we can't even apply that at schools! At my high school we're going to start a lunch time duty where a few willing people will go around to the class rooms and turn off any unwanted appliances such as lights, computers, etc.
We really have to start making a change to society, starting at school is a great way!

The High Costs of Solar Electric Power

Promotion of solar power generation is booming. After analyzing a few of these announcements one is left with quite a few questions. Why are solar farms built when financial data clearly show that solar power is still the most expensive electricity generation technology available?

Solar power plant developers and marketers obviously know that they need to lower costs. Cost reduction is, however, expensive and takes time. Many new enterprises have been formed and want to become profitable when the big construction boom in solar power plants will hit the road. In the meantime they must pay bills, advance their technologies, and stay alive.

There are two major technologies for solar energy conversion. One approach is based on the conversion of sunlight into heat and using the heat for the generation of steam. This concept has progressed to a relatively high readiness level. Electricity production with steam is a very mature technology. Remaining technical risks, therefore, relate exclusively to the design of the thermal concentrators or parabolic mirrors that optically transfer thermal radiation to a heat transfer medium and to the design of the heat receiving transfer and steam containment surfaces.

The other technology is the direct, photovoltaic conversion of sunlight into electricity. This technology will most likely become the dominant solar electric power generating technology - eventually. The big question for investors and for marketers is the uncertain duration of "eventually". Converting sunlight directly into electricity is much more elegant and will almost certainly become less expensive than thermal conversion - eventually.

Very recently, IBM proposed a third concept, a kind of a hybrid approach. In this concept, the sunlight is concentrated onto a solar panel. This approach reduces panel area and saves lots of expensive silicon. But it generates another problem. The concentrated sunshine creates very high surface temperatures on the solar panel. To save solar panel area and make the solar panel price competitive, one must cool the surface of the solar panel very efficiently to prevent it from melting and destruction.

Installing highly effective cooling loops and providing a low temperature cooling medium presents a new set of technical challenges and costs. We will have to wait and see how IBM will solve these issues.

Present production costs for generating electricity with solar panels are hovering around $0.50 per kWh. This compares with an average US retail price for electric power of $0.095/kWh. Right now, solar power does not yet make economical sense.

All renewable energies share this distinction. None of the available technologies using renewable energy can compete with the cost of electricity generation from coal.

This is also one of numerous examples where free markets perform poorly. The technologies for generating electricity with solar power, wind power, marine power, and geothermal power are very well understood. What is missing is the industrial hardening of these processes and related hardware. This process of moving a technology from the demonstration plant stage to a more dependable and less costly mature system status is the most critical, costly, and dangerous step when developing industrial systems, which must operate uninterrupted 24/7 for thousands of hours on end.

The US cannot reduce its carbon dioxide emissions and cannot achieve energy independence without employing renewable energies for electric power generation and for the critical production of liquid transportation fuels.

At present, a respectable number of windmill farms and solar panel farms are being installed. Forward thinking industrial and public entities take the liberty to impose hidden taxes on the consumers of electric power in industry, in commercial enterprises, and in homes.

Solar power does not make economical sense, yet. However, by providing an income guarantee for investors, the crucial hardening and cost reduction phase of full size solar farms will be shortened tremendously.

There is one inherent danger in this approach. The consumers of electricity pay for this most crucial development phase while other participating parties make out handily. Effective controls for avoiding unproductive duplication of certain types of solar farms are sorely missing.

Duplication of experience is much less valuable than gaining broad experience from competing technologies and installations. Well engineered solar power farms can indicate their readiness for more widespread applications after a couple of uninterrupted, full capacity, generation campaigns. At completion, qualified technology leaders can begin to compete and can drive down total system installation costs by a variety of cost reduction measures.

Where are we now? A random sampling of recent announcements of solar farm installations reveals that system installation costs are in the $3000 to $7500 per kW installed capacity. These plant costs loosely translate into a cost of producing electric power at $0.30 to $0.60 per kWh. This very unfavorably compares to the cost of electricity generation by any other technology.

These figures do not yet contain the costs of energy storage. As long as solar power constitutes only a very small fraction of overall electric power generation, the additional costs of storing intermittently produced electric power are not yet of concern. If the US is going to depend significantly on the intermittent production of electricity from solar power and wind power, it must begin to develop storage technologies for huge amounts of electric energy. Frequent brownouts due to lack of wind and sunshine are unacceptable in advanced economies. Intermittent, renewable energies and electric energy storage are inseparable. This is a technology field where inventors, entrepreneurs, and venture capitalists still can shine.

Is using ac or a huge metallic gazz fan more energy saving?

I would like to know whether using air-conditioner at 25 degree celcius is better than having a huge metallic fan at power 1 or 2. The fan is by the brand name of Gazz, here is an example of it but just alot bigger than a computer screen and its metallic. http://www.google.com.sg/imglanding?q=gazz%20fan&imgurl=http://www.rctech.net/forum/attachments/malaysian-r-c-racers/481825d1248751462-rc-equipments-sale-gazz-4-inch-high-velocity-fan.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.rctech.net/forum/malaysian-r-c-racers/6562-rc-equipments-sale-1429.html&usg=__ZDi_03ifEM_WeUgDg6mlpR4ovd8=&h=480&w=640&sz=89&hl=en&um=1&itbs=1&tbnid=PsJeYsL5XUr-EM:&tbnh=103&tbnw=137&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dgazz%2Bfan%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN%26tbs%3Disch:1&um=1&sa=N&tbs=isch:1&start=0

Which one save more electricity?
How much electricity they use?

I always give 5 stars for best answer =) *****

For the electricity, you'd simply have to look at the 2 devices and their specifications, particularly look for how many watts/kilowatts. In general, the AC will use more electricity, but will do a better job of cooling you.

The AC cools the entire room, fans only cool people (the air speed over your skin increases, meaning the pressure the air exerts on your skin is lower, lower pressure means it feels like a lower temperature to you).

Go Green and Save Energy, Fuel, and Your Hard-Earned Money

We now hear "Go Green!" and "Conserve Energy!" on a daily basis. It is the rally cry of mother earth. The awareness of a need for increased energy savings is in the spotlight thanks to pollution, energy shortages, obvious waste and abuse, as well as because of politics and human greed. But why it has come to the forefront of so many conversations is not as important as the fact that it has. Television ads, newspaper editorials, magazine articles, and informational internet sites have educated people around the world more in the last five years than in the previous one hundred years in regard to the conservation and saving of energy and gasoline in particular. Reasons for saving fuel and energy are many, but the two most predominant ideas that stand out are the destruction of our only home; the earth... through pollution and greenhouse gases, and secondly for financial savings and the cost of harnessing, producing, and using fuel and energy . Someone has to pay for energy and for gasoline, it has never been free and it never will. We will focus on the latter of the two. Can we raise the bar on energy savings by pushing the fact that less energy used equals smaller energy costs on a personal level? Is an individual's personal wealth an easier sell when it comes to saving gas and energy?

Let's look at the costs of daily life in an industrialized nation. The most obvious example is lighting which is powered by electricity. The invention of the light bulb has extended the usefulness of daily life well into the night and even through the nighttime hours until sunrise. There's heat in the fall and winter seasons powered by various fossil fuels including oil, natural gas, coal, wood, and electricity (generated by fossil fuels). We need to cool ourselves in the summer months through air conditioning. It's invention and widespread use has increased summer electricity use exponentially. Water flows freely from your faucet as well. However, water is far from free. To pump it from an underground well you need electricity. If you have access to public water, it is delivered through a system of public pipes and water lines. This water is pumped from strategically located pumping stations through the use of high capacity electric pumps but only after being thoroughly filtered and treated at a local water treatment facility, which of course requires a large amount of electricity to operate. Then there is the automobile... a staple of life in developed nations. Motorized vehicles require fuel like gasoline and diesel fuel to operate. Fuel is produced by refining oil which is pumped from well beneath mother earth. The process to develop gasoline is a process that requires energy and then that finished product is consumed as energy for our vehicles after we've purchased it from a filling station of course.

Some of us may conserve resources because we care about the future of our planet but unfortunately many do not. It is inconvenient for some to take a bus to work or to turn down the thermostat in your living room. However when we look at energy savings as a means of putting cash back into our pockets every month the idea of energy saving becomes much more appealing. A ride on the bus to work each day is not everyone's cup of tea, but turning down a thermostat shouldn't be an issue for anyone. As a rule of thumb, every degree above 68 that you set your home heating thermostat costs you an additional 3 to 5% on your heating bill. With today's utility rates this could mean $200 to $400 dollars annually if you kept your house at 72 degrees. And in summertime, does your home air conditioner really need to run all day? In most cases no... In warmer regions where air conditioning is a part of daily life it could be just a matter of raising the thermostat a few degrees to realize hundreds of dollars of savings on your electric bill annually. How about the family car? Do the kids really need it to drive to school when the bus rolls past the house every day? Can you combine errands and eliminate some miles rom your driving? With gas prices fluctuating in relation to weather, natural disasters, oil prices, and the stock market, it is difficult to estimate the savings at the fuel pump for any individual. But there are plenty of online gas calculators available free of charge that can help you see your specific fuel spending as well as some idea of how much you can save yourself.

These are merely three of the many examples of how saving energy and fuel can directly affect your personal life and that of your family immediately. In tough economic times, the media should place more emphasis on saving your hard-earned money for other things beside utilities and handing over your hard-earned cash at the gas pump. The thought of rewarding ourselves in cash may be just what we need to spark even more energy savings worldwide.

Save Electricity Air Conditioner

What is the best temperature at which to run my window A/C unit?

I have a window air conditioner with a digital temperature setting. I'm curious what most efficient way to cool the room is. Should I set it to 68 for a small period of time and then turn it off for a while? Or is it better to set it to 74 but have it running longer. I'm curious because my instinct tells me that I'm probably not saving much electricity by setting the A/C to a higher temperature. I would guess it uses almost the same amount of power regardless, so I might as well set it lower, cool the room faster, but turn it on less frequently. But I'm basically just guessing.

Anybody know the answer?

set the unit at 74 and leave it alone. The unit will eventually cool the items in your room to a comfortable range and slowly run less. the less you have in a room the less time it will take to reach that plateau.
A lot of people don't realize that the cooling process involves all the items in a room, not just the air itself. Additional load or heat producing items will make the cooling process more difficult, such as incandescent lamps, TVs, Stereo systems and refrigerators.
