Save Electricity At Office

Save Electricity At Office

About Saving Electricity?

I'm kind of selfish & prefer incandescent lighting (sp?) to fluorescent lighting in my home. I get enough fluorescent at the office...it's a depressing hue for me...I don't think I'm alone in that regard. Anyone know any other alternatives?

Also, I'm wondering if dimmer switches, which I have installed for all the light "cans" in my home, will actually reduce the amount electricity usage for the bulbs they control? In other words, will dimming my incandescents help save electricity?

I like the incandescent bulbs we have switched to CFL's and they make a terrible humming noise after awhile really distracting when you want to read or are doing paper work

Save Electricity Save Environment

Save Electricity Save Environment

are schools environmental friendly?

Well I dont know if you know but it seems our natural resources and more are in used too much. I was wondering do schools actually care about saving the environment by using energy saving lights because i see lights will always on and computers are never shut down. recycling is sometimes i see, and i dont know what else to say, but dont you think its a good idea that saving electricity is a start schools should do?

Yes, turning off lights are one of the most simple things we can do to help the environment but still we can't even apply that at schools! At my high school we're going to start a lunch time duty where a few willing people will go around to the class rooms and turn off any unwanted appliances such as lights, computers, etc.
We really have to start making a change to society, starting at school is a great way!

Save Electricity Air Conditioner

Save Electricity Air Conditioner

What is the best temperature at which to run my window A/C unit?

I have a window air conditioner with a digital temperature setting. I'm curious what most efficient way to cool the room is. Should I set it to 68 for a small period of time and then turn it off for a while? Or is it better to set it to 74 but have it running longer. I'm curious because my instinct tells me that I'm probably not saving much electricity by setting the A/C to a higher temperature. I would guess it uses almost the same amount of power regardless, so I might as well set it lower, cool the room faster, but turn it on less frequently. But I'm basically just guessing.

Anybody know the answer?

set the unit at 74 and leave it alone. The unit will eventually cool the items in your room to a comfortable range and slowly run less. the less you have in a room the less time it will take to reach that plateau.
A lot of people don't realize that the cooling process involves all the items in a room, not just the air itself. Additional load or heat producing items will make the cooling process more difficult, such as incandescent lamps, TVs, Stereo systems and refrigerators.

Save Electricity At Work

Save Electricity At Work

Methods for Saving Electricity

We’ve all heard often enough that it’s time to start thinking and saving electricity. We’re depleting the Earth’s resources in record amounts, and it’s becoming more and more clear that we need to start thinking in terms of protecting and preserving the Earth and her resources when we build.

Heating, air conditioning, lighting, cooking and refrigeration were the first elements easily identified as major power burners in private dwellings, and as such received a great deal of attention. Subsequent regulation has been directed toward building and insulation standards for climate control and hot water systems, especially for homes built to Energy Star and other efficiency and green building standards. However, there are many other sources of energy waste.

Often over-looked are the insidious consumers of electricity - products that appear to have been turned off, but which in fact continue to burn many watts while they lie idle in standby mode. Chargers (wall warts), DVD players, set-top boxes, and TVs all fall into this category. Again, as recent government legislation and programs have focused on setting maximum no-load and standby power consumption limits, designers of such equipment must find new solutions to match the demands of the regulations.

In recent years, we’ve seen a push to improve how efficiently we use our energy . But, is this proliferation of energy saving programs and incentives really helping to alleviate the energy crisis we’re facing. If it is, is it enough? Is buying energy saving lights and appliances really going help us decrease the number of generating facilities we require to provide us with the energy we need now and in the future? Should we be confident that our politicians really understand how to fix our current and future energy situation?

I suppose we could take the position that every little bit helps. I can’t deny that no matter how much or how little we save, it is better than doing nothing!

1. Turn off lights when you leave the room

That seems obvious, but how many times do we forget? And it's not just inside lights. Do you leave the porch light on when you go out for dinner and a movie? Over the long run, you'll save money by installing a motion sensor to turn the light on when you come home. Timers are also available to replace switches , so that the lights will go off after a preset time.

2. Turn off devices that you're not using

There really aren't many electrical devices in a home that need to be left on 24/7. In my own case, just the fridge and when I'm home the scanner and my 2 meter ham rig stay on all the time. That's about it.

3. Don't heat or cool to extremes

No matter how much you hate the heat (or cold), you'll save a lot of money if you keep your house around 28° - 29° in the summer and about 21° or so in the winter. I keep my house right at 28° during the summer and 21° (a much more pleasant temperature) in the winter. If you don't feel comfortable at those economical temperatures, adapt your clothing. It's your house, you can wear cut-offs or a sweatshirt if you like. And you'll love the money you save.

4. Add more insulation to your home

One of the most effective energy-saving things you can do. More insulation will help you keep it that way. As long as you’re dealing with your water heater, you might as well add some insulation. Since the standard hot water heater is on all the time, adding extra insulation will save more energy than you think. Most hardware stores sell pre-made insulator “jackets†that can be easily wrapped around one’s water heater. Experts estimate that adding insulation to your water heater and any exposed pipes can knock up to 15 percent off the costs of heating water. Then consider walls and double-pane windows.

5. Lower water heater temperature

You'll save energy by lowering the temperature of your water heater. Many times the heater runs just to maintain a tankful of water at a temperature much higher than you'll ever use.

6. Put electric water heater on a timer

Installing a timer on your electric water heater is one of the best ways to save big bucks on your electric bill; that is, once you take care of the "simple" methods such as adding extra insulation to the tank and lowering the water heater temperature. For most families, that's in the morning and the evening. No need in running the heater when everyone's asleep or at work or school.

7. Use electricity on off-peak time

Off-peak time means 21:30-7:00 every day. During this period, the cost of electricity is half.

Although brief and only meant as an introduction, I sincerely hope that this article will bring new light to how we view and manage this serious energy problem we face not only for today, but for our future.

Save Electricity Device

Save Electricity Device

Is there any energy saving device that could effectively lower my monthly electricity bill?

I'm desperate about it.

Yo Starfire --
The absolute most effective "thing" to help in this regard is NOT a device !! It is the careful attention to the air loss in and around windows and doors in your home !!
The effective use of energy in the heating and cooling of a home is MAXIMIZED by the proper insulation around windows and doors -- this is the place that some 22 to 30% of energy can be lost to the great outdoors while YOU pick up the tab !! Any good home improvement center can give you a rundown on how this can be done with the smallest of investments in insulation materials and time -- and the savings will pay for this in no time at all !!
Also, in the heating and cooling of your home -- the use of fans to move air around within the home can be a useful tool that will allow you to lower your settings on the A/C somewhat and still maintain a comfortable feel within the place at a tremendous difference in cost between the A/C settings and the cost of running a couple of fans !!

Hope these ideas can be useful to you -- they certainly have helped with MY overall energy consumption !!!

Save Electricity And Save Money

Save Electricity And Save Money

Ways to save money when you have a baby/ family?

I have a 5 year old and a 14 month old and each month we spend what we earn and we live comfortably. However, we don't have enough to save money for Christmas or birthdays etc and end up being a little short on money on those months.

What are some money saving ideas?

I am already going to stop using the tumble drier to save on electricity and I already switch all sockets off when not in use.

Thanks.

You have to start thinking S-M-A-R-T. What kind of cutbacks can you make? For example: I drink bottled water. Paying $1 a bottle on something that covers over 65% of our planet is not smart. So I bought one of those water filters that screw into your faucet. I have bottles that I refil over and over again. This doesn't take much time and you will reduce your carbon footprint as a bonus. Do you have a lot of small appliances around the house that are always on? Televisions, subwoofers, sterio equipment and microwaves use the most energy when they are left plugged into the outlet, even when they are turned off. Plug all your plugs from entertainment system into those 6 prong outlet plugs with the switch on them. When you are not using these items shut the switch off. I noticed a huge difference on my electric bill just by doing this. I also bought some of those florescent bulbs that look a lot like a regular bulb. These things use 80% less electricity than regular bulbs. Ave 60Watt incalescent bulb (old school) runs you 2 cents per hour. Ave 60Watt energy bulb averages 0.5 cents per hour. Wanna be creative? Find yourself leaving lights on? Buy a motion sensor switch, the lights will turn on when you enter the room and will turn off (by a set amount of time) when you leave the room. I have one, they cost $15 at HomeDepot. You would be surprised, but these small things add up. If you really need the money right away start cutting back on your food costs. Romain noodles cost a dime and they taste just as good as campbells chicken noodle that costs over $1 a can. Ok no chicken in romain noodles, but you are probably just missing about 4 tiny pieces of chicken. Adjust your toilet to use lesser water. If you don't know how to do this then put a brick inside your toilet 'chamber'. You will use a less water each time you flush, this adds up over time people. Before you know it you will be ahead. Need new windshield wipers for your car? Who says you have to buy 2? You only need the new one on the drivers side, leave the old wiper on the passenger side. Are you an impulsive buyer?? Listen here's what you do......always save the receipt. Find a place to save all the boxes, packaging, etc. Try to get obsessed with folding all the packing materials, making them neat and tape the receipt onto the box/package. Make a game out of it. And get yourself into a new habit called "impulse returning" I once bought a shampoo rug cleaner to scrub my carpets. After I was done I didnt need it anymore so I returned it to the store. I like to think of it as free rental. So remember you have to start thinking S-M-A-R-T! Yours truly seahorsehawrey.

Save electricity can really save money and resources!

Save Electricity Box

Save Electricity Box

Top Electrical Safety Investments

Bill Lutz, an electrician with Generation 3 Electric in Philadelphia, lets us in on some safety tips that you need to hire a professional for. But, it will be well worth it in the long run.

Get your breaker box inspected: I always recommend that once every five years a homeowner calls an electrician to open the breaker box and tighten each and every breaker and screw in it. This is because, as a mechanical piece of equipment, these can and do loosen or become damaged. A simple loose breaker can cause a breakage failure which might lead to an electrical fire. A loose connection will also put “noise” on your circuit which will give you worse quality power which translates into inefficiency as well as worse quality picture and sound on your high definition entertainment system.

Replace your old electric box: If you realize that your electric box is over 30 or 40 years old, save money and hassle by having it replaced now rather than waiting for an emergency situation. Take the time to compare prices and schedule an appointment with a recommended licensed electrician, rather than having to shell out more than you would have had to later if you are faced with a sudden emergency when it fails.

Update old wiring: If you know that the wiring in your home is over 60 or 70 years old, you will save money and headaches by having it replaced now rather than when it fails and you are desperate. New wiring is far better than the older systems that were installed half a century ago. Safety standards and technology has increased quite bit in the last 50 years. If you have an older house, you should definitely update the wiring the next time you remodel your home. Take the opportunity when you are breaking into walls to replace the old wiring system too. This will prevent electrical fires and surges in addition to breakages. Safety is always first and you are less likely to get shocked with new wires too. Less noise is in your electronics with newer wires, insuring the highest quality picture on your TV and the cleanest sound on your stereo system. New wiring systems are also more isolated from one another, which protects against surges and allows for more power per room for your many appliances.
